In 2019, the American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) first partnered with the Weiser Diplomacy Center to co-host a University of Michigan Ambassadors Forum, featuring a discussion panel with senior U.S. diplomats, student seminars and office hours, and a community event with a local high school. AAD experts enhance student and public understanding of critical foreign policy areas and pressing foreign affairs issues. The November 2019 panel focused on U.S. diplomatic efforts in the Persian Gulf and featured Ambassadors Patrick Theros, Gerald Feierstein, Ronald Neumann, and Deborah McCarthy.
In December 2020, the virtual panel focused on African, Latin American, Middle Eastern and European issues and featured Ambassadors Dawn Liberi, Hugo Llorens, Alexander Vershbow and Ronald Neumann. In 2021, the in-person panel focused on China and the challenges for a future U.S.-China relationship, featuring panelists Ambassadors Sylvia Stanfield, Craig Allen, David Shear, and moderator Ambassador Gerald Feierstein. The 2022 panel addressed the global implications of the war in Ukraine and included Ambassadors Susan Elliott, Richard Boucher, Robert Cekuta, and Ronald Neumann.
On October 13, 2022 the Weiser Diplomacy Center and the American Academy of Diplomacy co-hosted a discussion with four former ambassadors on the global implications of the war in Ukraine. Ambassador Susan Elliott considered the war’s implications for NATO and the future of Europe; Ambassador Robert Cekuta discussed implications for Central Asia and Russia’s “near abroad”; Ambassador Richard Boucher discussed implications for Asia, including China’s position in this evolving world; and Ambassador Ronald Neumann moderated and provided a perspective on implications for the Middle East.
